Mix 'n' Match Mod

Built from a mix of 1970s modular pieces, reworked and resized into one cohesive, chunky form. Easy, warm, and made to actually live on.

People often think we’re upholsterers at HiLo. Upholstery is part of it, but what we really do is build custom seating using vintage and recycled frames.

Most of these pieces are overlooked—worn out, not working, on their way out. What you don’t see is that a lot of vintage was built with solid hardwood. So while they might not look like much on the outside, they’re actually great building material.

Each piece is reworked, tailored, and built to last.

And for the mid-century purists—don’t worry, we don’t mess with the iconic stuff too much.

Here’s what we did:

• Used two different sets of 1970s modular pieces to create a five-piece configuration
• Modified each section to match the client’s dimensions—seat height, back height, and depth
• Cut into the end pieces and added a custom curve
• Added a chunky wrapped foam build to soften and unify the form
• Upholstered in a faux mohair

It’s built from parts, but it reads as one—comfortable, grounded, and pulled together in a way that just works.
